SUMMARY:Local economic development: towards agribusiness cluster devel
 opment
DESCRIPTION:Bridging the rural/urban divide, this course uses an adapt
ed version of Porter's Diamond to analyse local sub-sectors for boosti
ng urban and rural wealth through agribusiness cluster development. Ho
w local communities and youth can play a role in co-creating intervent
ions for positive change in this field, is zoomed into.\nThe course is
aimed at catalysing vibrant rural economies. It focuses on the changi
ng roles of rural policies and services in sub-Saharan Africa. It intr
oduces the participants to a set of five typical interventions that, o
n their own or in combination, are designed to boost local market dema
nd, add value, smoothen rural trade and increase local economic activi
ties generating income and employment. In this course each type of int
ervention will be illustrated with real-life cases that are presented
by the ‘case owners’ themselves. This will assist to better apprec
iate the rigidity of reality. The course is highly interactive and bui
lds on the participant’s own experiences and personal cases. These w
ill serve as building blocks for ‘bankable’ project that will be d
eveloped during the course. The programme offers a balanced ‘diet’
including introductions to concepts, practices, participatory group w
ork, guest lectures, case study presentations and excursions.\nUpon co
mpletion of the course you will:\n\nhave a good understanding of conce
ptual frameworks to identify development opportunities for rural commu
nities and spin-offs for rural wealth creation;\nbe able to appreciate
the linkages between poverty and livelihood strategies, the role of a
gribusiness development and effective services delivery, and the poten
tial of rural markets, local trade and value chains to ‘work for the
poor’;\nbe able to facilitate participatory approaches and methodol
ogies for innovation and change processes;\nbe able to apply tools and
instruments for strategic and effective interventions catalysing proc
esses that boost rural economies.\n\nFor information about this course
