SUMMARY:International short course: Responsible aquaculture developmen
t for food security and economic progress
DESCRIPTION:On a global scale aquaculture has been growing steadily in
the past decades. The global demand for aquaculture products is drive
n by an increasing world population, stagnant capture fisheries produc
tion and a growing awareness of the positive impact of consumption of
fish and other aquatic products on human health. Fish and other seafoo
d have become important export commodities for several developing coun
tries. Especially in East, South and S.E. Asia aquaculture is a well-e
stablished and growing sector. Target audience: This course is design
ed to train policy makers, civil servants, scientists, farm managers a
nd others who play a key role in the development of the aquaculture se
ctor in making strategic sector management plans in line with the FAO
ecosystem approach to aquaculture; orient them about the possibilities
and design principles of more intensive aquaculture techniques such a
s recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and intensive integrated aqu
aculture-agriculture systems. The course will also better management p
ractices and environmental certification standards that are growing in
importance on the western food market. The course aims to: - train
policy makers, researchers, teachers, extension officers, farm manager
s and private sector representatives in making strategic sector manage
ment plans in line with the FAO ecosystem approach to aquaculture; - o
rient them about the possibilities and design principles of more inten
sive aquaculture techniques such as recirculating aquaculture systems
(RAS); - make them familiar with better management practices and certi
fication standards that are growing in importance on the western food
market The course will be organised in cooperation with Wageningen Un
iversity and private companies. Practical information Price: 3,900 Eu
