SUMMARY:Course on Local economic development: towards agribusiness clu
 ster development with fellowship opportunity
DESCRIPTION:The course is aimed at catalysing vibrant rural economies.
  It focuses on the changing roles of rural policies and services in su
 b-Saharan Africa. It introduces the participants to a set of five typi
 cal interventions that, on their own or in combination, are designed t
 o boost local market demand, add value, smoothen rural trade and incre
 ase local economic activities generating income and employment. In thi
 s course each type of intervention will be illustrated with real-life 
 cases that are presented by the â€˜case ownersâ€™ themselves. This wil
 l assist to better appreciate the rigidity of reality. The course is h
 ighly interactive and builds on the participantâ€™s own experiences an
 d personal cases. These will serve as building blocks for â€˜bankableâ
 €™ project that will be developed during the course. The programme off
 ers a balanced â€˜dietâ€™ including introductions to concepts, practic
 es, participatory group work, guest lectures, case study presentations
  and excursions.\nCourse objectives\nUpon completion of the course you
  will:\n\nhave a good understanding of conceptual frameworks to identi
 fy development opportunities for rural communities and spin-offs for r
 ural wealth creation;\nbe able to appreciate the linkages between pove
 rty and livelihood strategies, the role of agribusiness development an
 d effective services delivery, and the potential of rural markets, loc
 al trade and value chains to â€˜work for the poorâ€™;\nbe able to faci
 litate participatory approaches and methodologies for innovation and c
 hange processes;\nbe able to apply tools and instruments for strategic
  and effective interventions catalysing processes that boost rural eco
 nomies.\n\nTarget audience\nThis regional course is designed for mid-c
 areer professionals of government departments, non-governmental and ci
 vil society organisations, business associations, development agencies
 , universities and colleges for higher education, and for other profes
 sionals working in the domain of market-driven local economic developm
