KM and International Development, Ottawa Workshop: May 12-13, 2003 
"Knowledge Sharing in CoPs and in Globally Distributed Organizations & Networks"

DAY 1 - May 12, 2003 
Theme: Experiences in Communities of Practice

N.B: Prior to the workshop, we will ask workshop participants to fill out a KM Profile detailing what their organization has done re. KM, especially their involvement with CoPs.

8:30 - 9:15: Welcome, brief overview of KM4dev workshops, introductions of participants with talking object, overview of the agenda

9:15 - 12:30:

  • Presentation by Etienne Wenger on CoPs: establishing a common language, examining leading edge issues
  • Stories from 2 organizations
  • Q & A / discussion
  • Brainstorming on what issues, questions and possibilities should be explored on Communities of Practice (with possible breakouts into small groups)

(This session includes a break from 10:30 - 11:00)

12:30 - 1:30: Lunch

1:30 - 3:00: Rotating Peer Assists in break-out groups (three pre-assigned volunteers who would like assistance from the group in dealing with a CoP / Thematic Network issue. The three groups will each have a "Peer Assistee" and switch after 30 minutes)

3:00 - 3:30: Break

3:30 - 4:15: Report back from the Peer Assists - plenary discussion

4:15 - 5:00: My 'One insight' / 'One thing that I will apply' � using a taking object, participants can tell others what they will take away from this day

5:00 - 5:15: Pulse-check

5:30 - 7:30: Wine and cheese in the Nayudamma Lounge at IDRC

DAY 2 - May 13, 2003 
Theme: Sharing Knowledge in Globally Distributed Organizations & Networks

8:30 - 8:45: Welcome and introduction to the day�s agenda

8:45 - 10:00: Three presentations (in AAR style) by individuals sharing knowledge in globally distributed organizations and networks (in person and via video conference)

10:00 - 10:30: Brainstorming on what issues, questions and possibilities that should be explored on "Sharing Knowledge in Globally Distributed Organization & Networks"

10:30 - 12:45: Birds-of-a-Feather discussion in break-out groups on the topics (reports are written out and completed by afternoon break). Participants will sign up to three different 40 minutes small group discussions

(This session includes a break)

12:45 - 2:15: Lunch (and drafting of report)

2:15 - 3:30: Presentation of the reports and reflection. Each participant will identify 1 individual (or organization-wide, if applicable) action item to be done as a result of the day's work and then partner with others who have identified a similar action item to explore how to move forward

3:30 - 3:45: Break

3:45 - 4:15: Closing Discussion

4:15 - 4:45: Talking object / AAR
